Het oeuvre van Ekseption, één van de meest eigenzinnige bands uit de Nederlands muziekgeschiedenis, wordt geëerd met de 13-CD tellende boxset ‘Planet Ekseption’.

Na diverse wisselingen van naam en bezetting sinds 1958, debuteerde Ekseption in 1966 met de single ‘Ekseption At ABC’. In 1967 en 1968 brengt Ekseption twee singles uit op het Imperial label, maar de grote doorbraak komt als de band in 1969 een contract krijgt bij Philips waar hun naamloze debuutalbum verschijnt. Het album zorgt direct voor internationale erkenning. Wat volgde was een succesperiode waarin de band in een periode van ruim drie jaar tijd zes albums afleverde die stuk voor stuk succesvol waren.

Toetsenist Rick van der Linden had in deze periode de muzikale leiding binnen de band naar zich toegetrokken. In 1973 werd hij echter door de overige leden uit de band gezet en bleven van de oer-leden alleen Rein van den Broek en Cor Dekker over.
De albums die na het vertrek van van der Linden volgen wisten het succes van hun voorgangers niet te evenaren. In de latere jaren volgen er meerdere reünies is wisselende bezettingen. Inmiddels zijn Cor Dekker (2005), Rick van der Linden (2006) en Rein van den Broek (2015) allen overleden. De muzikale legacy die de band achter laat is nu samenbracht in deze boxset.

De eerste 9 albums van de band, die werden uitgebracht door Philips, zijn alleen opnieuw gemasterd vanaf de originele mastertapes. De overige drie albums zijn van de best mogelijke bron gemastered. De bonus disc met non-album singles en b-kantjes, bevat voor het eerst sinds de release in 1966 de drie tracks van de debuutsingle, ook opnieuw gemastered van de originele tapes.
